A LITTLE ABOUT LIONS
Lions are the greatest feline giants of the African and Asian wilderness. Their influence, though, goes beyond science and the animal kingdom. They are considered symbols of courage, power, and strength in many cultures. The ultimate spirit animals for those dealing with life’s greatest obstacles. We can also learn from them in terms of protecting and loving our family members.
These mammals may look super fierce and scary, but they have a soft side (yes, just like humans!). They love caring for their children and protecting their family members. They feed and thrive as one! A pride of lions is composed of related females and their cubs, in addition to one male or a small group of males. It is the job of the male lions to defend their pride. The lionesses, on the other hand, raise their cubs together. These cubs can even suckle milk from any female within the group.
Do you know that there are two kinds of lions? African Lions live in sub-Saharan Africa, while their Asian counterparts, Asiatic lions are native to India. They are a bit smaller than their African cousins, but nothing short of majestic. Asiatic males also have thinner, shorter manes compared to the more prominent, fuller hair of African male lions.
Lions are powerful animals, but just like any other creature, they are not without enemies and predators. From time to time, they fight with cheetahs and hyenas to compete for food. But, guess who is their number one enemy? Humans.
The African lion population is believed to have declined by more than 40% in just three generations. At present, less than 25,000 wild lions remain in Africa. As for Asiatic lions, only around 500 are left in the wild, and all of them can only be found in one place – at Gir National Park in India, a 545-square-mile forest and wildlife sanctuary. That sanctuary is smaller than Greater London! The decreasing population of lions is due to a lot of factors, including trophy hunting and loss of habitat.
Let us help save lions by spreading the word about their current situation. Why not use them as an inspiration for your creative efforts? Work on lion coloring pages, and show people how beautiful they are and that the world needs them. Coloring can help both kids and grownups turn their heads to things that matter.
