A LITTLE ABOUT WINTER ANIMALS

During the cold season, we usually make hot chocolate, hide under the covers, binge-watch movies and engage in other relaxing indoor activities as we wait for the return of beach weather. Animals, too, slow down during winter to conserve energy and survive the adverse environment. Amazingly, not all animals hibernate this time of the year.

Some fish, bats, whales, and elk migrate to look for food. monarch butterflies, beetles, and earthworms travel far and wide to find a suitable place to eat, rest, breed, and escape the harsh weather. Some animals, meanwhile, can resist the snow and the cold. Arctic foxes even change the color of their fur as the seasons change.

They wear grayish-brown coats during the warmer months. Once the temperature drops, they shed for a heavy white coat for warmth and camouflage while hunting. Arctic hares do the same to disguise their appearance and escape from predators. Come summertime, they return to their darker color to blend with the surroundings.

Polar bears and penguins, some of our favorite winter animals, reside in the iciest locations in the world. Penguins live in the southern hemisphere. On the other hand, polar bears are in the northernmost part of the planet. Who wouldn’t love seeing these lovable creatures wearing white winter clothes?

Unexpected winter wildlife encounters can be dangerous. So if we can’t see them up close, let’s draw and color them. These winter animal coloring pages are fun to work with as you enjoy a cup of hot cocoa by the fireplace. The best winter activity for those who want to stay indoors but don’t want to miss out on the beauty of winter wildlife and nature.
